Teen Beat Interview
ALL STARS: Are you living in Los Angeles now?
DEVON SAWA: I'm living with two guys. I'm living with a slob and a guy who sleeps all day. Its nuts, crazy. There's three of us in there and it's like a typical bachelor studio apartment. Boy, is that wild! Let me tell you! The place is a complete mess-towels everywhere, were up all night-its just crazy, but a lot of fun. They're the coolest guys though, they're the greatest guys.
ALL STARS: How did you hook up with them?
DEVON SAWA: One of them is Stuart Stone who I worked with on The Boys Club, and the other guy I met through Stuart. His name is Phil and hes from New York. He did the voice of Feivel in An American Tale. So, a couple of actors.
ALL STARS: How would you compare L.A. to Vancouver?
DEVON SAWA: In Vancouver I feel much more at home because I don't have to worry about anything or care about people watching how I act. When I'm here, I've got to worry about being recognized.
ALL STARS: So, they don't recognize you in Canada?
DEVON SAWA: They're starting to now. In L.A. I always get recognized in the malls-always. They come up and ask for autographs, follow me and watch me and stare at me. Its flattering and annoying at the same time.
ALL STARS: Is that just in L.A. or other places too?
DEVON SAWA: In New York I get recognized. Sometimes I get mistaken for Leonardo DiCaprio. I admire him in a huge was and hes the most amazing actor, but its painful in a way, you know?
ALL STARS: What happens when you get recognized?
DEVON SAWA: There's the typical, Is that him? No its not! Girls just stare. One or two people recognize me, and then in a half-hour thirty 12 and 13-year-old girls swamp me.
ALL STARS: Do you ever want to yell, Leave me alone!?
DEVON SAWA: Not yet. This is all happening so quickly and I'm just getting used to it. I think by the time I get used to it and they start coming in bigger herds then maybe Ill start yelling, Leave me alone, but right now its still flattering. How bad is it for girls to ask for your autograph, really? Its cool. When I was at the Planet Hollywood opening in Vancouver, 15,000 people were there and I had to walk down this block-long red carpet while all these girls were yelling and screaming with their pens and paper. It was cool, so what can I say?
ALL STARS: How did your family feel about you moving to L.A.?
DEVON SAWA: They know it's the right thing for me to do. I'm planning to go back to Vancouver every couple weeks, but they're cool with it. They're supportive.
ALL STARS: Are you going to college?
DEVON SAWA: I'm thinking about it right now. It's all preliminary. I'm looking into different schools and programs. If the acting thing slows down, I'm going for sure. But, right now its going great so schools on the back burner right now.
ALL STARS: What have you been doing since you finished filming Wild America?
DEVON SAWA: I took six months off, finished high school, and hung out with friends. Before Wild America came out, I worked straight—it was Casper, Little Giants, Now and Then, The Boys Club and Wild America—all in one big run so I needed time off to settle down for a while.
ALL STARS: What's next for you?
DEVON SAWA: Ive been seeing people about projects to start things up again. I'm reading a lot of scripts. I'm in between projects and I'm reading a lot, just taking it day by day. I'm looking for the right thing to do.
ALL STARS: What would that be?
DEVON SAWA: I'd like to do an action film or a dark sort of independent piece. Either of the two. Maybe a Vietnam movie, but who knows.
ALL STARS: But, with your talent and looks, something's got to turn up soon.
DEVON SAWA: I hope so.
