Starshine Devon Sawa

Devon's "Live and Kicking"

Live and Kicking magazine: July 1997

Is Devon Sawa really about to become a pop star? In yet another brilliant Live & Kicking Magazine exclusive , the Casper star — soon to star in Wild America — reveals all...

Devon, so is it true you're in the middle of moving house?

Yeah, I'm moving from my parents' house in Vancouver to LA as we speak. I've been looking at apartments to rent and have liked a lot of them, but Los Angeles feels so different to home. I'm really gonna miss my family and friends and I don't know if I can handle nice weather all the time!

We heard rumors that you're planning to go to college...

Well, I want to, but it all depends on my schedule. I can't suddenly drop everything and go to college when I'm just getting things going acting-wise. But I'd love to study film.

Does it annoy you when you get asked to take your earrings out for movie roles?

Yes! I've had to take them out for every role I've played. Some day I'll get to keep them in, when I play a deranged cult leader or a disgruntled post office worker!

Have you thought about getting anything else pierced?

Well, I'd love to get my nose pierced, but it would be harder for make-up artists on movie sets to cover up that kind of hole! I love it when girls have pierced bellybuttons, though.

Talking of girls, how can you tell if they date you for what you are rather than who you are?

I think I can usually tell who's sincere and who's not — even if I might be fooled for a while. Like, if somebody just wants to talk about my acting career and who I know, that gives me a pretty good idea of what they're really about. If someone cares more about spending time with me, hanging out and doing things we both enjoy, then I know they're a good person. I hate it when people I meet are overwhelmed by the so-called glitz of the business.

Are your friends in the biz?

They're a mix. That classic acting-obsessed kind of person doesn't interest me much. I try to keep a balance — my life means much more to me than my work, although I do love my work. I wouldn't want to do anything else!

Would you like to be in a band?

I've always fantasized about that, but I don't have any real musical talent, or a good singing voice, so where does that leave me — playing the tambourine? (Or the triangle Dev!) I wish I had musical talent.

So if music's out, what's next for you?

Well, Wild America's out in the UK later this year and besides finding an apartment, I'm trying to decide on my next project. I want to do something that's really stretching. I'm reading about five scripts at a time!
